8 Common Laundry Mistakes You’re Probably Making

6 Common Laundry Mistakes You’re Probably Making

If you’re a little slack when it comes to ensuring your laundry processes are flawless and refined, you’re not alone. Doing the laundry involves a lot more than simply tossing a bunch of different items into your washing machine and pulling them out when they are ‘clean’.

1. MINIMIZE WHAT YOU HAVE IN THE FIRST PLACE

This is easier said than done, but as with anything, if you actually own less clothes, then there is less time needed to devote to maintaining and washing. So we ask you to declutter, think about what you have and what you could use less of. Maybe towels, bedding and of course your clothing. By cutting back, even in small amounts, you will see an immediate effect on your laundry piles, you will re-wear your items more before washing and (a bonus!) you will have more space and less clutter to deal with!

2. ASK YOURSELF DOES IT NEED TO BE WASHED?

We can all agree it is easier at the end of the day to just throw our sweater in the laundry bin when it could easily be put back away and worn again a second time. If you have kids, this is especially true and there will undoubtedly be items in the bin that do not necessarily need to be washed. So make it a routine to ask yourself or tell your children that clothing can be worn again and make a diligent effort to put it back in the closet for another day!

3. BUY EASY TO WEAR COTTONS

Items like wool and silk, though nice, usually require separate wash cycles that can take time and must be washed separately. To minimize this extra time, invest in easy-to-wear cotton pieces, which not only allows for grouping items together but also will avoid trips to the dry cleaners! When everything can be added to your general wash you not only save time but money as well (plus cotton in general is better for the environment then synthetic fabrics like polyester!)

4. FILL UP THE MACHINE

This may seem really obvious and a no-brainer but can be completely missed when you have massive piles of laundry and are rushing to get things done. By filling up your machine to it's maximum allowance you will drastically decrease the amount of loads you'll need to do and it will be noticeable! To help with this you can set up a few bins labeled with the approximate maximum load of your machine (keep whites, darks, and colors separate) and when one is full, you can just toss it in as it's ready to go and sorted!

5. DON'T LET IT BUILD UP!

It's easy to let the piles go when life gets in the way. Then having to face it day in and day out can be a bit overwhelming. That's why if you tackle it little and often you can easily make your laundry work alongside your daily routine without too much interruption. For example, add in a load first thing in the morning, add it to the dryer at lunch and then put it away after dinner. That way you can add in more wash throughout the day at your own convenience and stay on top of it!

6. GET THE FAMILY INVOLVED

This is a big one, especially when it comes to folding and putting away clothes, as this part can take up the most time. To get children involved they can have their own basket with newly washed items - then they can take up the task themselves - for example, make sure they have low hanging hooks and designated drawers that are easy to reach. This can also be true for other adult household members and can be made into an evening routine that everyone can participate in.
